Excellent article. I wish I could get my ideologue-crazed friends and family to read it, but alas, that's unlikely.

I recently heard someone talking about the difference beween "marginal" and "marginalized". There certainly are many legitimately marginalized people in the world. And I see many more who are marginal by their own actions and desires to be free of their "oppressor" label. These people would of course never admit to this, even (especially) to themselves. But it's clear to see the motivations behind many of the affuent progressive white people, children and adults alike, who embrace various ideologies to gain some measure of victim status and therefore not be at the top of the oppressor totem-pole.

Also, when it comes to affirming anyone, the people who rely on lived experience as their sole criteria for what's valid and real only affirm the viewpoints they agree with. The mental gymnastics are impressive. If they would only put that energy and brilliance towards something truly helpful, they could accomplish great things.
